What is Adjustment Disorder?

Adjustment disorder is a group of symptoms, such as stress, feeling sad or hopeless, and physical symptoms that can occur after you go through a stressful life event.

Signs and Symptoms of Adjustment Disorder

  • Persistent sadness or hopelessness
  • Anxiety or worry
  • Difficulty functioning at work, school, or home
  • Irritability or anger
  • Problems with relationships or social interactions
  • It's important to note that adjustment disorders are typically triggered by specific life events/changes.

Diagnosing adjustment disorders requires a comprehensive evaluation by our licensed counselors. This involves a clinical interview to assess the individual's symptoms, medical history, and recent stressors. Diagnosis follows DSM-5 criteria, focusing on emotional or behavioral symptoms within three months of a stressor, along with impaired functioning. Other potential causes are ruled out. Treatment options are then personalized to address the individual's needs and circumstances.

Types of adjustment disorders

Adjustment disorders are excessive reactions to stress that involve negative thoughts, strong emotions and changes in behavior. The reaction to a stressful change or event is much more intense than would typically be expected.

The guidelines list six types of adjustment disorders:

  • With depressed mood. Symptoms mainly include feeling sad, tearful and hopeless, very tired, and taking no pleasure in the things you used to enjoy.
  • With anxiety. Symptoms mainly include nervousness, worry, having a hard time concentrating or remembering things, and feeling overwhelmed. Children may strongly fear being separated from their parents and loved ones.
  • With mixed anxiety and depressed mood. Symptoms include a blend of depression and anxiety.
  • With disturbed conduct. Symptoms mainly involve behavioral problems, such as fighting or reckless driving. Children and teenagers may skip school or damage or destroy property.
  • With disturbed emotions and conduct. Symptoms include a mix of depression, anxiety and behavioral problems.
  • Unspecified. Symptoms do not fit the other types of adjustment disorders. But this type often includes physical problems, problems with family or friends, or problems at work or school.

To create an individualized plan, you need the right specialist who can pinpoint symptoms and understand how they affect your or your loved one’s daily life.
