Squishies are everywhere. Slow-rising foam animals, soft silicone food shapes, jiggly water
beads, your child probably has a collection of them. And if you’ve ever watched them
squeeze, stretch, and press the same squishy toy for the tenth time in a row, you may have
wondered: what exactly is going on?

This is not a passing trend. The squishy phenomenon has roots in child development, sensory science, and emotional regulation. Understanding why children are drawn to these textures can tell you something meaningful about how your child experiences the world and what their hands are doing for their brain.

What “Squishies” Actually Are

Squishies, in the broadest sense, refer to any soft, tactile object that provides satisfying
resistance when squeezed. This includes commercial slow-rise squishy toys, kinetic sand,
putty, slime, stress balls, playdough, and sensory fidgets. They share one defining quality: they push back.
That push-back is, it turns out, exactly the point.

Why Touch Is So Powerful for Children

Your child’s sense of touch is their first sense. Before sight and language develop fully, touch is how infants begin to understand the world, its temperature, texture, weight, and safety.

That relationship between hands and brain does not disappear as children grow. It deepens.
The tactile system processes information through receptors in the skin. When a child presses a squishy object, those receptors send signals to the brain that trigger a cascade of responses.

The pressure activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for calm.
Heart rate slows. Breathing steadies. The body shifts, subtly but measurably, toward a
regulated state.

Your child is not just playing. Their hands are doing real work.

The Role of Proprioception

There is a lesser-known sensory system that squishies engage particularly well:
proprioception. This is the body’s sense of its own position in space the awareness of
where your limbs are and how much force your muscles are exerting.

Children with underdeveloped proprioception often seek what are called “heavy work”
activities: pushing, pulling, squeezing, and pressing. These activities provide the sensory
feedback the nervous system is asking for. Squeezing a squishy toy delivers that input in a
safe, contained, socially acceptable way.

For many children, especially those with sensory processing differences, ADHD, or anxiety, proprioceptive input is deeply regulating. It helps the nervous system feel settled and oriented.

Squishies as Emotional Regulation Tools

Children feel things intensely. Big emotions arrive fast and leave the body needing somewhere to go. Squeezing something soft is one of the most instinctive ways a child can discharge that physical tension.

You may notice your child reaches for a squishy toy when they are frustrated, overstimulated, or anxious. This is purposeful behavior, even when it does not look like it. The hands are helping the brain find its footing.

Occupational therapists and child psychologists have long understood the value of fidget tools and sensory objects for emotional co-regulation. Squishies function similarly, they give the nervous system a productive outlet and a point of focus when internal experience feels overwhelming.

The Slow-Rise Factor

One specific quality of commercial squishy toys has captured children’s attention in a
particular way: the slow rise. Watching a compressed foam object slowly return to its shape
engages visual attention in a way that feels almost hypnotic.

This is not accidental. Slow, predictable movement activates what researchers describe as
“attentional capture” the brain naturally tracks things that move within a predictable rhythm.

The slow rise of a squishy offers a small moment of visual certainty in a world that is often
unpredictable for children. There is satisfaction in watching something go exactly the way you expect it to.

That sense of control, however small, matters more to children than adults often realize.

Sensory Seeking vs. Sensory Avoiding

Not every child responds to textures the same way. Some children are sensory seekers  they
actively look for strong sensory input and feel more regulated when they get it. Others are
sensory avoiders  certain textures feel overwhelming or even painful to them.

Squishies appeal largely to sensory seekers, but they also serve children who need a gentle,
low-intensity sensory experience. The key is the child’s relationship to the sensation. A child pressing joyfully into kinetic sand is telling you something different from a child who recoils from the same texture.

You know your child best. Watching which textures they move toward and which they move away from reveals something real about how their nervous system is wired.

What This Means for Your Child at School

The squishy phenomenon intersects with learning in ways that matter for parents and
educators alike. Research into sensory processing and attention consistently finds that childrenwho are given appropriate sensory input are better able to focus. A child squeezing a small stress ball under a desk is not distracted often, they are managing their arousal level well enough to stay present.

This is why many occupational therapists recommend sensory tools as part of classroom
accommodations for children with ADHD, autism spectrum differences, anxiety, or sensory
processing challenges. Squishies are low-profile, quiet, and portable. They do not disrupt other students. They give busy hands something to do, which frees the mind to engage.

When the Squishy Behavior Signals Something More

For most children, squishy play is healthy, developmentally appropriate, and self-directed. You do not need to intervene.

There are moments, however, when the intensity or frequency of sensory-seeking behavior
may point toward something worth exploring. If your child seems unable to regulate without tactile input, if they become distressed when a squishy toy is unavailable, or if sensory needs are interfering significantly with daily life, those are meaningful signals.

What You Can Do to Support Your Child’s Sensory Needs

You do not need a professional diagnosis to begin responding to your child’s sensory world
thoughtfully. There are small, practical ways to support sensory regulation at home:

  • Provide a sensory bin. Rice, dried beans, kinetic sand, or water beads give hands
    something rich to explore during play.
  • Keep a sensory toolkit. A small bag with a stress ball, putty, or a squishy toy that
    travels with your child to school or appointments gives them access to regulation tools
    when they need them.
  • Allow sensory play without judgment. Children who can access sensory input freely
    are more likely to self-regulate effectively over time.
  • Follow your child’s lead. The textures they return to again and again are the ones their
    nervous system finds most helpful.
  • Your child’s sensory needs are real. They are understandable. They deserve to be met with
    patience.

Your Child’s Hands Know What They Need

The squishy phenomenon is not a quirk or a phase to be managed. It is a window. It shows you how your child’s nervous system seeks balance, how their hands communicate what their words sometimes cannot, and how deeply the body is involved in the work of growing up.
